When We Were Small

I very rarely buy new music, or music from new artists. I tend to be a bit
conservative, waiting to see who stands the test of time before I commit to
buying a CD. But when a friend who had seen Rosie Thomas in concert and bought
the CD played me “Have You Seen My Love?” and “Two-Dollar Shoes”
from this, Thomas’ first release, I knew I had to buy this CD.

Rosie Thomas’ lyrics are simple but not trite or clichéd. Her tone
is at times sad, but not by any means despairing—it’s actually quite
light at times, and, although the songs tell mostly of loneliness and lost love,
she avoids bitterness (for the most part).

One need not be single to enjoy this CD, though it may help to at least remember
what single life was like, and it may help to be female, or at least interested
in the dynamics of relationships—this music is unabashedly emotional territory.
What you do need to enjoy this CD is an appreciation for slow acoustic music
by a singer/songwriter with an honest, genuine voice.

This is a great first CD from a talented musician. “Two-Dollar Shoes,”“Wedding
Day,” and “Have You Seen My Love?” are, I think, the strongest
tracks, but this CD is strong all the way through. This wistful music satisfies
with its depth of yearning.
