Murder by Numbers

I think Sandra Bullock is one of the best actresses in Hollywood these days. She comes off as smart, sweet, innocent, and yes sexy in every thing that she does. In fact, it’s her work that carries almost every film she’s in. But not even a tow truck could have carried this script to a decent showing.

Bullock is expected to get us to believe in a character that is now a cop but was once nearly stabbed to death by her husband. She’s got this crusty exterior that no one wants to work with in spite of the fact that she sleeps with all of her partners. She’s super-analytical on crime scenes, develops a crush on one of the teenage suspects, and is scared to testify at her former husband’s parole board. Oh yeah — she also changed her name after he attacked her, but no one on the force knows that. It’s a part that no one should have been asked to play.

The plot is very transparent. It’s like the writers took a 1940s murder movie plot and changed the names to avoid a lawsuit. Even with the “twist” at the end, it was still a by-the-numbers formula movie. There’s no point in the movie that will make you wonder about the killer or about anything really — except why you’re still watching it.

Sorry to sound so negative about this movie. Normally anything with Sandra Bullock in it will get at least a strong “two thumbs in the middle” from me. This time, though, the only good I can say about the movie is that Bullock looks as ravishing as ever.

Avoid this movie unless you need a temporary cure for insomnia.
