Riot Act

The past year in mainstream music has left me feeling left in an abyss of frustration. Radio overplays bands without an ounce of true original talent. They have one song, which becomes repackaged into 12 mindless tracks. I have searched for bands able to heed my desire. Few have quenched my thirst like Pearl Jam’s latest album, Riot Act.

To start, the music is incredible. Tight guitar licks, driving bass, creative drum licks, and vocals that pull everything together. This alone makes it all worth buying. But that isn’t the whole piece. Eddie Vedder’s lyrics are simply stunning.

Heavy emotion is twisted into each song. “Can’t Keep” is the first track that truly awakes the mind and lays out the journey this CD will take you on. A journey of deep pain, happiness, distrust, and anger. In the song “Love Boat Captain,” Vedder sings: “Is this just another day… this god forgotten place? First comes love, then comes pain.” The band even gets a bit political with the song “Bush Leaguer.” I’ll let you figure out to whom the song is intended.

Riot Act is a great album. The band’s musicianship shines through like a beacon to wayward ships. It gives me hope that the music industry can and will continue to produce great music. Believe me, if you liked Ten, you’ll be extremely happy with this release.
