Let’s use New Zealand for word association. What’s the first thing that comes to mind? Lord of the Rings? Eco-Challenge? Island? Well, here’s a new thing to add to your repertoire — The Datsuns.
The Datsuns’ self-titled release is their first, aside from singles that were put out on vinyl. Their sound is very similar to that of Rush in the early 70s or to The Who of “My Generation.” The guitars are raunchy and vibrant, with a great accompaniment from the rhythm section. Just listen to “Harmonic Generator,” and you’ll see what I mean.
Almost everyone can relate to the songs. They deal with love and heartbreak. However, they aren’t the slow, sappy songs that America digs. Hardcore is the only way to describe them. The lyrics of “MF From Hell,” “Lady,” and “In Love” demonstrate the wide range of feelings during a relationship.
The Datsuns constructed an excellent CD that brings back the sound of the early 70s. The energy contained within this CD is powerful and it all stems from strong guitar riffs, fulfilling bass lines and simple, but strong drum rhythms.
