When I first read the jacket of Their Wildest Dreams, I thought, Hmmm…sounds
like .nightsandweekends.com/articles/03/NW0300225.php>Strip
Tease to me — because the main character, Helen “Mackie” MacIsaac, is a
divorced mother who finds that the only way to support herself and her daughter, Lianne,
is to take a job as a stripper.
But that’s where the similarities end.
Abrahams magically strings together the lives of his border-town
characters — the loser ex-husband who’s constantly trying to scam people (including his
ex-wife) out of millions, the teenage daughter who falls in love with a young wrangler at
the ranch her dad’s trying to swindle, the captain of detectives, the entrepreneur who
wants to make money in any way he can, and the struggling mystery writer who (in a less
believable plotline) is sent down south by an obsessive Amazon.com reviewer to learn more
about police procedure. Though I was somewhat disappointed by the ending, which seemed
to be way too simple, and by a couple of one-dimensional characters, the story was filled
with twists and turns and the frequent ah-ha moment. And that was enough to keep
me turning pages.
Abrahams is an effortless storyteller, which makes this
an effortless read. As long as you’re willing to overlook a few flaws, Their Wildest
Dreams is worth picking up — though I recommend waiting until it comes out in
paperback.
