Live at the Roxy Theater

I often get asked the question, “Cory, what do bands do

when they’re not recording or touring?” In all actuality, I have never been asked that

question, but if I was, the response would be very simple. Band members usually relax,

write new music, and form some side projects.

The band Incubus is no

different. After a long time on the road in support of their release Morning

View, the boys decided it was time for some relaxation. However, a couple of them

found it a little difficult to stay away from playing live music for too long. On

January 24, 2003, Michael Einziger (guitar) and Jose Pasillas II (drums) got together

with some of their musically inclined friends to form Time-Lapse

Consortium.

Poets talk about taking the path less traveled—and this was

the route taken for the members of this group. The musical quality is different from

what Incubus fans hear on their albums. The entire CD is instrumental, except for the

cover of “A Certain Shade of Green.” Live at the Roxy Theater has a feel a bit

similar to 70s surf music, mixed in with the right amount of Latin

Jazz.

“Grimace” is the first song on the CD—not something you’ll do when

you hear it. Trust me. A heavy bass line played by Ben Kenney (formally of the Roots)

introduces the track to the avid listener. Then, in the words of Emeril Lagasse, “BAM!”

The brass section and organ join in to set the tone not only for this song, but also for

the entire CD. For another song that has a sweet bass line accompanied by the organ,

check out “Come Back Boomerang.”

Ending the CD is “Tres Puntos.” This

song was written about where many of the musicians used to go surfing. In it is a sample

of a famous theme song from a 70s police show. I’m going to leave it up to you to figure

it out.

Time-Lapse Consortium is a fantastic side project for all of these

people. It really displays their musical ability. Live at the Roxy Theater

indicates that American Idol contestants are not the only talented musicians in

the world. This disc can only be ordered online, so check out www.enjoyincubus.com.
