Grand Don’t Come for Free

The word on this album was brilliant, even before I started listening to it;
I’d

heard from several sources that this was something different. After
listening to

this addictive, emotional and yes, even beautiful album I was
convinced that I would

have to stray from my ordinary reviews of rock and
roll and review this electronic

masterpiece.

The lyrics are honest, sometimes painful, sometimes joyous

but always
delivered with plenty of empathy for the subject, for you see, the album

is
also a story and the characters are made to come alive like in a novel

(perhaps I have not strayed as far as I thought…) The cockney accent of
the

protagonist, songwriter extraordinaire Mike Skinner, adds to the London chic sound and

overall ambiance of the experience.

In order to truly appreciate the full

potential of the album, it is vital to
listen to it in the exact order that the songs

appear the first time around,
otherwise many of the references will be missed and

these are half the fun.

Songs that stand out for sound or amusement

quality are “It Was Supposed to Be So Easy”; “Blinded by the Lights”; “Fit but You Know

It” and the touching “Dry Your Eyes”.

All in all, this is an album that

can be played repeatedly and never seems
to grow tired. It is fantastic as a

showcase listen, or for subtle
background music. I definitely recommend it to anyone

who is tired of the same old standard and is looking for something a little out of the

ordinary.

Cheers, mate!
