Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason

It’s been three years since Renée Zellweger first graced

the big screen as the pleasantly plump British singleton, Bridget Jones. And with the

release of Bridget Jones’s Diary, the Hollywood rumor mills started churning out

stories about the sequel—most of them relating to how many Krispy Kreme donuts poor Renée

had to eat to gain all that weight back. The eagerly-anticipated sequel was so

eagerly-anticipated that the Hollywood Big-Wigs decided to release it a week earlier than

planned. But fans of the first movie—and of the books by Helen Fielding (read the

reviews of Bridget

Jones’s Diary and
Bridget Jones: The Edge

of Reason)—wondered if the sequel would be able to live up to the

hype…

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason picks up just weeks after

Bridget Jones’s Dairy left off. Bridget is happily settled into her glorious

coupled life with Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). But then Mark starts canceling plans and

working late—and spending a little too much time with Rebecca (Jacinda Barrett), a

gorgeous associate—and Bridget begins to wonder if her Prince Charming is just another

frog after all. Throw in a new job working a little too closely with

anything-but-faithful ex, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant), who wants Bridget back—and a stint

in a Thai women’s prison—and you’ve got yourself another Bridget Jones

movie.

The Edge of Reason may be a romantic comedy—but it’s got a

little less comedy than you may expect. Sure, there are some pretty hilarious moments,

but they’re fewer and farther between. And if you’re a fan of the book by the same name,

be warned that the movie is quite different (or so I was informed by my friend, who saw

the movie with me). But that doesn’t mean that The Edge of Reason is a bad movie.

It’s not quite as good as the first (but hey, it’s a sequel—what did you expect?), but

it’s still very Bridget. It’s sweet, it’s funny, it’s got Colin Firth and Hugh Grant,

and I’m pretty sure that every woman out there can relate to Bridget’s paranoia and

insecurity (admit it—you know exactly how she feels). Bridget Jones: The Edge

of Reason is a great choice for your next girls’ night.
