On a particularly slow morning at work at Fudgepacker’s, a London company that supplies unusual props to film and TV companies, Morgan tells his coworker, Russell, an odd story. He claims that, one Christmas Eve, in a local pub called the Flying Swan, the bartender opened an unusual Christmas gift (which the giver claimed was the long-lost Ark of the Covenant), and the whole pub just disappeared.
Determined to prove Morgan wrong, Russell sets out in search of the pub and finds more than just a man who claims to be the famous bartender from the former Flying Swan. He also stumbles upon a man who appears to be a very angry, very alive, Adolf Hitler. But that’s only the beginning of the adventure for Russell, whose life until this point has been totally adventure-free. What follows is increasingly more bizarre and adventurous—a story that features time travel in German-made flying saucers, spine removal, possible alien involvement, and a low-budget movie starring holograms of old movie stars.
Nostradamus Ate My Hamster mixes Back to the Future with The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (read a review of the movie) in a bizarre sci-fi/humor/adventure novel, full of seemingly unrelated stories and chapter-long sidetracks. You’ll never quite know how things fit together until the end. You’ll never quite know who’s lying and who’s telling the truth. And you’ll never quite know what’s real and what’s just a strange dream that the author threw in to throw you off-track. And while it’s all really strange and complex and confusing, it’s also wonderfully entertaining. Since it’s so complex, I wouldn’t recommend listening to it a little at a time—during short commutes—since you’ll quickly lose track of what’s going on. But it’s a great listen for a longer road trip—when you can listen to it all at once. It’ll definitely keep you on your toes—but be warned that you could get so caught up in the story that you may miss an exit or two.
