After almost 20 years of marriage, Amanda Sheridan has become a desperate housewife. Her husband, Rob, decided to trade up for a gorgeous young blonde named Tiffany. Her 15-year-old daughter, Meghan, blames Amanda for Rob’s desertion. And her 12-year-old son, Wyatt, is sullen—and his baseball pitching ability has suffered. To her former suburban housewife friends, Amanda has become an outcast—and the only people who will speak to her are Brooke, a young trophy wife who’s struggling to keep her husband happy, and Candace, Wyatt’s baseball coach’s well-bred new girlfriend.
It gets worse when Amanda goes to Candace’s divorce lawyer and finds out that Rob is in debt up to his eyeballs. If she’s going to keep her promise to the kids and keep the house, Amanda is going to have to get a job for the first time in 15 years—and she’s not qualified to do anything.
With the help of her friends, Amanda dons a disguise and starts a new business, cleaning her neighbors’ houses as Solange, the flamboyant French maid. She just hopes that no one sees through her disguise—especially not Hunter James, the gorgeous single dad whom Amanda can’t get out of her mind.
Light and fun and a little bit devious, Single in Suburbia is a great fix while Desperate Housewives is in reruns for the summer. While the story isn’t exactly original (in fact, it’s a lot like Cha Cha Cha—with a little bit of Mrs. Doubtfire thrown in), the characters make it fun to read. Though the story focuses on Amanda, Wax creates a strong supporting cast as well. Amanda, Brooke, and Candace are all determined women—whether they’re determined to provide for their kids, make their marriage work, or finally life their own life—and you’re sure to see a little bit of yourself in at least one of them.
Strong and sizzling, Single in Suburbia is a great summertime read for chick lit lovers. If you’re looking for a book (or two…or three) to pack for your summer vacation, you can’t go wrong with Wendy Wax.
