Not being someone who has ever put much thought into my dreams, I found this book and the method of dream interpretation to be quite fascinating. Walden leads us through the Dream Classifications: therapeutic, cathartic, predictive, cleansing, healing, inspiring, rebuilding, and processing. She then explains that each classification is your subconscious helping you work out things that are bothering you, holding you back, or unclear to you in your waking hours.
The book gives several examples of each type of classification, with a dream and explanation of its meaning to get beginners started on the path of dream interpretation. Each sample dream, along with the following explanation, is insightful—but for me, a mere novice, a bit of a stretch. Walden’s theory is that once you know how to classify your dream and understand the important roles that your emotions play, then you’re on your way to understanding the gifts to be found in dreams.
Here’s how the process works: as soon as you awake, write down everything important from your dreams with as much detail as you can recall. Who, what, when, where, etc. And be sure to include how you felt while dreaming. Then you make a list of the most significant words from your dream and place them in column one. Column two is three is dictionary definition. When you’ve completed the process, you should be able (if very gifted, in my opinion) to read the list as if reading a book—and it will reveal to you important information that you’re trying to reveal to yourself in your dream.
The book is, if nothing else, very entertaining. Here are just a few of the fascinating interpretations of everyday things:
BlackBerry – Dreams of a BlackBerry, a small phone/organizer/address book, signify that you are realizing the enormous power you have in the palm of your hand.
FedEx – Dreams of FedEx represent your desire to have a message or communication delivered quickly with a guarantee. Consider the message that is being sent and why it is so urgent.
Jam – Dreams of jam signify that you are in a sweet but sticky situation; because you’ve spread yourself too thin, now you’re stuck. Jam also represents precious memories preserved in the photo album of your mind that get sweeter with time.
These are just a few of the nearly 3,000 symbols you’ll find in this amazing little dream dictionary. I found the premise behind the dream interpretation to be a bit of a stretch, but some of the definitions are quite interesting.
