It all began in Reno. That’s where The Tick (voiced by Townsend Coleman) showed up for the annual superhero convention and was assigned to be the superhero in charge of protecting The City. Once in The City, The Tick meets Arthur (voiced in the first season by Micky Dolenz of The Monkees), a former accountant who lost his job because his employers just couldn’t get used to his moth costume, who eagerly takes on the role as The Tick’s sidekick. Together, the two then began their crime-fighting journey.
The Tick, a cartoon series based on the comic by Ben Edlund, originally aired in the mid-‘90s. The Tick Vs. Season One follows the big blue superhero with way more brawn than brains as he battles The City’s greatest villains—like Chairface Chippendale, El Seed, and The Breadmaster. According to villain Mr. Mental, “His brain is the size of a cherry pit.” Yet, with the help of his reluctant and often terrified sidekick, Arthur—and occasionally with the help of The City’s other ineffective superheroes, who tend to hide out at the local diner and skip town whenever danger rears its ugly head—The Tick somehow manages to come out on top. And there’s always some kind of ridiculous moral in the end.
The Tick Vs. Season One includes twelve of the season’s thirteen episodes (all of them except, for some reason, episode 11). This superhero show that parodies superheroes is filled with smart, tongue-in-cheek humor—and its one-liners and exquisite attention to detail make it all the more brilliantly funny. I loved the show when it aired in the ‘90s, and though it’s been more than a decade since, the show is still every bit as hilarious now as it was back then.
Though you won’t find any special features in the two-disc set, you will find plenty of laughs. If you were a fan of the show, this one’s a no-brainer. Run right out and pick up a copy. If you’ve never seen The Tick, now’s the perfect time to see what you’ve been missing. The short, twenty-or-so-minute episodes are just the thing to pop into the DVD player whenever you’ve got a few minutes to kill—whether you’re waiting for your friends to show up or you’re waiting to board your flight. You’re sure to find yourself popping the discs in often, going back to watch your favorite episodes over and over again—just like I do. But be warned—once you start watching, you’ll never be able to get the catchy theme song out of your head.
