Transparent Things

This is a diverse collection of tunes with interesting titles and absolutely intriguing lyrics. The sound leans towards electronica but with a twist. The rhythm section is powerful throughout and every track is upbeat and danceable. The vocals are a bit reminiscent of Morrissey. The lyrics are twisted, clever and charmingly random, similar to those of They Might Be Giants.

It opens up with “Ankle Injuries,” a catchy jam laced with subliminal chanting of the song’s poetic moniker. In keeping with the anatomical theme, the next track is “Collarbone.” This one has a great beat, some very nice bass work and, despite the title, celebrates the entire skeletal system. “Photocopier” has a bit of a rap style and rhythmically laments the singer’s slow metabolism. “Conductor 71” is a nice jam, though some riffs get repetitive – I suppose that’s the point. The title track has some excellent guitar work and truly captivating lyrics. “In One Ear & Out The Other” has decidedly punk undertones. Because I so love the lyrics here, I was a bit disappointed that “Cassettesingle” is purely instrumental. Nonetheless, it is a gorgeous piece. The final track “Reeboks in Heaven” is stellar, with a perfect blend of instrumentals and genius lyrics.

There is a ton of talent packed in here and these guys clearly have a wonderfully eclectic mix of influences. Transparent Things manages to be both upbeat and soothing with that rare quality that will have you hooked on the first listen.
