Out of the Mouths of Babes

Hi Christine,

I had a dream about my eight-week-old baby. She said her first phrase. (I don’t remember what it was.) The baby then said her first sentence: “I like the leather pants and the anklet.” I don’t remember seeing leather pants in my dream, and she definitely wasn’t wearing them. Considering she was only eight weeks old and hadn’t spoken before, I was a little concerned. My midwife was also in my dream and said it was perfectly normal for my daughter to talk at this age.

Sincerely,

New Mom

Dear New Mom,

It sounds like this dream is a result of the normal anxieties that any new mother would have about her baby girl. Kids grow so fast, and I’m sure that you’re savoring every moment of that soft, chubby cuteness and sweet baby head smell. Perhaps in the back of your mind, you’re contemplating what you may encounter in the future. It’s like your subconscious is gazing into the horizon, looking at the big picture: enjoying this time with your baby but naturally concerned about the leather pants and anklet-loving young adult that she may transit through before she reaches full powerful, amazon womanhood.

Whether your midwife was present when Emily spoke and didn’t react, or you related what Emily said to her in your dream and she told you she though it was normal, suggests that, on some level, you understand that this is likely a challenge you may encounter in the future and, though it may be unsettling, it’s not unusual. Other characters (or supporting actors) in our dreams usually represent some aspect of the self. And the midwife’s outlook on the event seems to represent your more neutral (for lack of a better word) reaction to your baby’s first sentence.

Mary Pipher’s Reviving Ophelia is one of the best books I’ve read on this subject. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend it.

Best wishes and congratulations on your new bundle of joy.

Christine

(Please keep in mind that dreams speak to us through symbols and phrases and I interpret using these symbols as guides. When pondering any interpretations, the dreamer should always consider the more personal meanings the symbols in their dreams may have for them.
