Career and Corporate Cool

Every morning, millions of women get up, get ready, and head to the office—but how many of them really stand out? How many of them manage to make it through the day looking calm, comfortable, and even cool? And, most importantly, how can you be one of those women?

In her businesswoman’s handbook, Career and Corporate Cool, marketing guru Rachel C. Weingarten helps you market your most important product: you. She helps working women understand their environment and their own personal style—teaching them how to stand out (and get ahead) while still fitting in.

Career and Corporate Cool touches on just about everything you’ll ever need to know about surviving in the business world—and in life in general. While it doesn’t go into a lot of detail about any one topic, it does encompass just about every aspect of a corporate woman’s life. There’s a little bit of everything here—from wardrobe, accessories, makeup, and diet to business etiquette, customer service, and networking. There are even chapters on party planning and telecommuting. And it offers tips—both Weingarten’s and those of other well-known business professionals—on everything from wardrobe basics to handling family emergencies. You’ll find everything from product advice (like Weingarten’s favorite skin care products) to hotel recommendations (as well as a shout-out to the beautiful beaches and the friendly people in my hometown).

If you’re a woman who’s out there in the business world on a daily basis, Career and Corporate Cool is a great guidebook. While not every chapter may apply to you, there are so many tips and tricks and little tidbits of advice that you’re guaranteed to find something of use here. I know I did. And Weingarten writes with such a casual, conversational style (not to mention a great sense of humor) that it’s actually fun to read. She makes it feel like advice from a friend—instead of a stuffy business book.

Of course, if you’re looking for detailed makeup tips…or a style guide…or a book about crisis management, this isn’t it. It doesn’t walk you through every possible crisis, step by step. And it doesn’t tell you how to dress. It does, however, teach you how to work within your own sense of style to create a professional look that’s all your own. And it teaches you how to face each situation that may come your way while still managing to keep your cool.

While it’s sure to provide tips for working women at every level (even if your job title is Full-Time Mom), Career and Corporate Cool is a great guide for young women who are just starting out in the business world—and it would make an invaluable gift for any recent college grad.

After a short career in advertising, Kristin got sick of always saying nice things about stuff that didn’t deserve it—so now she spends her days criticizing things, and she’s much happier for it. Since creating NightsAndWeekends.com in February of 2002, Kristin has spent her life surrounded by piles and piles of books and movies—so many that her office has become a kind of entertainment obstacle course. As if her writing and editing responsibilities for N&W.com weren’t enough to keep her out of trouble, Kristin also hosts a number of weekly radio shows: Reel Discovery, Shelf Discovery, and On the Marquee. She’s also a proud member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (CriticsChoice.com), the Central Ohio Film Critics Association (COFCA.org), the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS.org), and the Women Film Critics Circle (WFCC.Wordpress.com).
