Gobblet is an award-winning hybrid of tic-tac-toe and chess. To begin, each player gets three stacks of wooden “gobblets.” Gobblets come in two colors and vary in size, and they’re similar in design to a basic nesting doll. Players take turns placing their gobblets on the playing board, either on an empty space or by “gobbling up” (or placing their piece on top of) a smaller piece. Play continues until one player gets four of his or her pieces in a row—vertically, horizontally, or diagonally.
Not only is strategy extremely important in this game, but memory also plays a factor as well—because gobblets must be lifted and placed on the board with each move. If a smaller piece is resting beneath the piece that’s moved, the smaller piece will be exposed to game play again. This aspect makes play interesting because if you don’t remember which pieces you gobbled, you might end up moving a gobblet and letting your opponent win!
This game will delight as well as challenge both adults and children alike. While playing with three stacks of gobblets will be challenging enough, some adventurous players may want to test themselves further. To make game play even more difficult, I suggest trying to play with only two stacks of gobblets per player. This method makes play a little more challenging, as it limits players’ moves and causes each opponent to pay close attention to the location of gobbled pieces. Game play becomes very interesting, as players are forced to be even more strategic in their movements.
As always with Blue Orange Games, the entire game is made of wood, and it’s painted with non-toxic paints. Blue Orange also continues their eco-friendly promise to plant two trees for every one that’s used in game production, making Gobblet a challenging strategy game that’s also environmentally friendly.
