I’m an eclectic gal when it comes to my music. I love ‘80s rock, classic rock, and much more. But for the past ten years or so, my favorite type of music has been country. So buckle up, NightsAndWeekends.com readers—we’re about to bring on a little bit of country, and we’re starting with the rough and rowdy Toby Keith.
If you want to taste a variety of country music sounds, start with Toby Keith. Even if you’re not a country fan, you’re bound to find something you’ll like on this two-CD collection of his biggest hits. For instance, if you prefer rock music, you might like “We Were in Love,” “Dream Walkin’,” and “You Shouldn’t Kiss Me Like This.” But Mr. Keith also has songs for honky-tonk fans—songs like “I Love This Bar,” “Honkytonk U,” and “Get Drunk and Be Somebody. ” I’m not as crazy about his beer-drinking music, though; instead, I prefer his fun songs, like: “How Do You Like Me Now?!” (which reminds me of my boyfriend, when we met again fifteen years after high school), “I Wanna Talk About Me,” and “Getcha Some.” But he also has crying-in-your-beer songs like “I’m So Happy I Can’t Stop Crying” (a duet with Sting) and cliché country songs—the kind that non-country folks like to make fun of—like “Big Ol’ Truck,” “Who’s That Man,” and “Country Comes to Town.”
Though Keith may appear to be a bit ragged around the edges, he also has a softer side, which comes out in his love songs. “Me Too” is the most honest love song I’ve ever heard. I also love “A Woman’s Touch” and “Big Blue Note,” and “A Little Too Late.”
Toby Keith is a huge supporter of our military, and he isn’t afraid to sing about it. One of my favorite songs is “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue (The Angry American),” which he recorded not long after the Twin Towers in New York were attacked. I doubt he was the only one who wanted to kick some terrorist butt back then. I know I did—which is why I love this song.
All of the songs mentioned above and more are on this collection of Toby Keith’s 35 Biggest Hits. The only thing missing on this CD is another one of my favorites, “Love Me If You Can,” a song that shows that Toby prays for peace and believes in Jesus—and that he’s not all about rednecks and bars. But I guess I’ll just have to wait patiently until it shows up on his next biggest hits CD.
Toby Keith’s 35 Biggest Hits is a fun collection of wild, beer-drinking, sing-out-loud-with-your-windows-rolled-down country music. If you’re already a fan, you’ll absolutely love this CD. If you’re not, well, come along and see what you’ve been missing.
