E-Author Spotlight: Tara West

I’m always excited to come across a great young adult novelist, and Tara West is one of the best among E-book authors. One thing I consider a must is a cast of great characters (especially if they’re teens) to go along with a great story. So far, author Tara West hasn’t disappointed me with her spooky teen reads, and I look forward to any future novels she writes.

Raised in Las Vegas, Ms. West preferred her imaginary friend, a crab that lived in her mom’s chimney, to the neighbor kid who tended to be too bossy. After her father died, she had a recurring dream that he was talking to her in the hallway outside her room, telling her that his spirit refused to leave the house. After her mom sold the house, the new owners complained about seeing a spirit who looked exactly like her dad, pacing outside her bedroom door.

After discovering that she has an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto (a disease that leaves her progressively sick and fatigued), she became passionate about discovering new treatments and helping others who suffer from similar symptoms get proper testing and treatment.

Ms. West spends her time outside of writing designing cover art for romance novels. She also loves photography, graphic design, and collecting glass eggs from all over the world. Some of her favorite things include warm hugs from her husband and little girl, talking on the phone with her mom, nachos, Magic Shell, exercising, sunshine, water parks, and Disney World.

On Writing, in Tara West’s Own Words

What or who inspires you to write?

My family inspires me to write. Also, up until a few years ago, I taught high school journalism and English. A member of my writing team told me that since I coached writing and read so many novels, I should try writing a novel as well.

Why did you begin writing?

I wrote as a way to get so many thoughts out of my head. I would write on Saturdays while I waited all day for my high school writing team to finish their competitions.

Which author inspires you?

I have loved the works of so many authors. George Elliot’s Mill on the Floss is a book that has stayed with me for many years. Poetry by Emily Dickinson and William Wordsworth has also inspired me. Contemporary authors such as Lisa Kleypas, Julia London, Stephanie Laurens, J.K. Rowling, and Stephenie Meyer are also inspiring.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

Making others laugh.

Have you experienced writer’s block? And, if so, how did you cure it?

When I experience writer’s block, I usually design a novel cover or do something creative in Photoshop. Music also helps unlock my muse.

When is your next book due out, and what’s it about?

I am working on a romantic comedy. I am about halfway through, but I won’t search for a publisher until I’m finished. I am also working on two separate YA fantasies.
