Cosmic Thing was one of my signature albums during college. Sure, I listened to my share of Pearl Jam, too, but there’s nothing like the B-52’s when you’re getting ready for a night on the town – or when you’re trying to wake up and get ready for an early class.

The whole album is filled with whimsical, head-bopping silliness. Most of the lyrics, when you really try to pay attention, make no sense at all – or perhaps they’re all in code – but they’ll make you laugh out loud at the absurdity of it all.

Cosmic Thing is all about chillin’ – about hanging out. It encourages you to “just sit on the porch and swing” (“Dry County”), “go skinny-dipping in the moonlight” (“Deadbeat Club”), take off on a road trip (“Roam”), or hop in your Chrysler and head on over to the Love Shack (it is, after all, a little place where we can get together). Then they end it with a trippy instrumental – “Follow Your Bliss” – which, I suppose, is like the cool-down at the end of a good workout.

I have to admit that I miss the crazy irresponsibility of 80s music. Don’t get me wrong – I love the heaviness of today’s alternative music, but one can handle just so much angst. Then it’s time to forget about the stacks of bills and the depressing responsibilities of growing up – and to pull out the old Happy Music again. Thank goodness for the B-52’s!
