Saving Silverman is never going to be hailed as one of the best movies of its time. Heck, it’s not even the best movie in the bargain bin at Blockbuster. The plot is lame, the characters are one-dimensional, and you can see the plot twists coming from a mile away. There is no redeeming social value, it doesn’t teach you about life, or illuminate your soul. Despite all that, I laughed myself to tears watching it.
The movie revolves around three guys who have been pals for life. When one of the trio (Jason Biggs) starts dating the ultra-hot villainess (Amanda Peet), it threatens to separate the boys for good. Then the plot thickens -- really it does -- because she demands that he marry her and dump his friends. Oh yeah, she also makes him drop out of their Neil Diamond tribute band. The boys (Steve Zahn and Jack Black) decide to do the mature thing: kidnap her, fake her death, reunite their grieving friend with an old flame, and keep the old flame from becoming a nun by the end of the week. I told you the plot was lame.
Still, the comedy is well-timed, and the actors are doing their best to make the movie seem like an Oscar contender. Jack Black is a riot every time he crosses the screen, and Steve Zahn has the perfect delivery to set up the jokes for the rest of the cast. Jason Biggs for the most part is playing the same role as he did in American Pie. Amanda Peet is hot. Granted, she plays the bitch from hell, but she’s hot enough to make you understand why he’d ditch his buddies simply because she told him to.
This is a funny movie that’s worth the price of a five-day rental. If you can find it for less than ten bucks, go ahead and buy it. It’ll be money well spent.
