I’ve never claimed to have normal taste in music. When I was in college, those who lived in my dorm could hear anything coming from my room, depending on the day (and my mood). It could be U2 or Sting or The Cars or Pearl Jam or The Clash or Cyprus Hill or Bob Marley or George Winston. So what is it today? Currently, in the three-disc player on my desk, you’ll find Eminem, Pink, and the old standby -- the Doobie Brothers.

Best of the Doobies is a CD that has rarely left my CD player for years. Because it calms me. When I was suffering through a pathetic job, complete with a few idiotic coworkers, I put on my headphones and played this disc over and over again -- and it kept something that resembled a smile on my face. And now that I work from home, it keeps me company. It’s a collection of peppy (yes, I just used the word, “peppy”), easy-going, danceable tunes that I couldn’t live without.

From the moment I hear the first few notes of “China Grove,” I swear my heart rate slows. This really is a compilation of the best Doobie Brothers songs -- from “Long Train Runnin’” to “Listen to the Music.” It’s a CD that I could listen to over and over for months (actually, I have) without going crazy. In fact, I’m quite sure that this CD is the one thing keeping me out of a mental institution.

RPM editor’s note: Kristin has gone crazy. The men in white coats are currently paying her a visit. Remember, a padded room isn’t always a bad thing.
