When Al Simmons (Michael Jai White) is burnt alive in a munitions factory that he was commanded to destroy, he is sent to hell, where he strikes a bargain with the devil so he can return to Earth and see the woman he loves. The devil grants him this chance -- and offers him impressive fighting skills and a new identity on one condition...

He leads hell’s army in war.

Taking the bargain, Al returns to Earth once more as Spawn, seeking revenge on the man responsible for his death. On his arrival, he is confronted by veteran warrior, against the devil, Cogliostro (Nicol Williamson), who instructs him in the ways of justice. Spawn then renounces the evil within him and sets out to put right what was once wrong.

Just because I’m related to Spawn’s creator doesn’t mean I’m going to say anything nice about the movie...

It’s the movie many of us watched and waited for. It was promised to be much, much more than it was. The film itself was a complete failure to many fans. The comic books and models still out-sell many other sci-fi models of its time, but Spawn, the film, was a great disappointment. I’ve watched it a few times and never found myself to be excited or moved by it at all.

Spawn’s costume design is fabulous, but that’s about all I can say for the film. There was hardly any story line, the acting by John Leguizamo , the Clown (who did a better performance in Moulin Rouge) was irritating, and the dialogue was awful. What was Todd McFarlane thinking?

All I can say to finish this off, is I hope they remake it. It had such talent to be a blockbuster film, but failed at the first hurdle. It has been said that Todd is going to shoot Spawn II, which should be released in 2003. Let’s hope these time the film crew gets it right.

If you want an action film, save yourself the bother with this one and rent something worthwhile -- like Spider-Man or The Crow.
