They stole from him $70.000, and that’s what he’s going to get back. Get read to root for the bad guy...

Porter (Mel Gibson), his wife, Lynn (Deborah Unger), and his friend, Val Resnick (Gregg Henry) rob the Chinese Mafia of $140,000 -- and Porter is expect to bag $70,000 from the deal. But his wife and Resnick team up against him, and he’s shot by his wife and left to die by best buddy. Vowing revenge to get back his share of the money, Porter first seeks out his wife, who’s overdosed on crack heroin.

Soon Porter begins going up the chain of command of the crime syndicate The Outfit -- where his ex-partner now works -- and killing off people who refuse to pay him the $70,000 that he feels is owed to him. Working his way through the crime lords, he is reunited with former lover Rosie, played by, Maria Bello. With Rosie’s help, Porter gets closer with every move he makes to getting back his money and more.

If you liked the Mad Max films, you’ll enjoy Mel in this film. You need quite a strong stomach to deal with some of the scenes in this movie, though, and you’ll also need to be a huge fan of black humour -- because this film is full of it. Supporting artist Lucy Liu brings some much-needed comedy to the film by portraying a dominatrix.

Payback is really one of those films that you can watch it and watch it again just for the sake of watching it, really. But there's nothing all that great about it. There are no extras on the DVD, and the quality of the picture itself is poor.

This film is choppy, cheesy, and crude -- and no one's laughing at it. Seriously -- save your money with this film. If you’re in the mood for a Mel Gibson movie, rent/buy Braveheart or one of the Lethal Weapon films instead.
