16 Biggest Hits is a great way to hear why Johnny Cash became a music legend. It’s got most of the songs that the average fan associates with his career—which makes sense because they are his biggest sellers with nothing else thrown in.

The music is taken in chronological order, which makes the pacing of the music a little off, but that can be forgiven this time. The first track out is Cash’s musical signature, “I Walk the Line;” the listener immediately gets drawn in by his voice. He sings with an honesty that can’t be digitized out. The hits on the disc run the range of the first half of his career. “Ring of Fire,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “A Boy Named Sue,” and the gospel standard “Daddy Sang Bass” are all here. So is a classic from some kid named Kris Kristofferson, called “Sunday Morning Coming Down.” For a man who had a limited vocal range, Cash had an immense emotional range.

This CD doesn’t have as unique a feeling as some of Cash’s other recordings. It’s a greatest hits disc put together simply on which records sold the best. Pick it up if you’re wondering why Johnny Cash is such a legend in the world of music. You’ll understand after you listen to it.
