In a Pickle is a challenging, but terrifically fun game for creative types and people who enjoy wordplay.

The game comes with several large stacks of cards. Each card contains one noun (people, places, or things). Four cards are drawn at random and placed face-up on the playing area, and five cards are dealt to each of the players. The goal is to figure out if any of the words on the face-up cards would fit into any of the words in your hand (or vice-versa).

For example, let’s say that the face-up cards are “Paris,” “dryer,” “shopping cart,” and “purse”. And the cards in my hand are “Washington,” “basement,” “turkey,” and “taxi.” In this case, I would say that a dryer fits inside a basement, and would place the “basement” card face-up on top of the “dryer” card (this would start a line). I’d then take another card from the draw pile, and play would continue to the next person.

When any one line acquires four cards, each player has one chance to continue the progression. The last player to successfully play a card in the line wins the set of cards. The first player to win the agreed-upon number of sets wins the game.

In a Pickle is fun, fast-paced, and hysterically funny. Trying to convince your opponents that a particular scenario works is bound to produce tons of giggles (for example, I managed to convince my husband that a shopping cart could go into a taxi…you never know what people will take with them when they leave a store!) For an added challenge, players can try to make each set create a coherent storyline from start to finish.

Bottom line: In a Pickle exercises the brain while being a lot of fun at the same time. It’s a great family game, but I’d also recommend it as a classroom staple for middle-school language arts teachers.
