Okay, so Emma Roberts hasn’t exactly had an unfabulous life. She’s got a fabulous Aunt Julia, for starters. She’s the star of a hit show on Nickelodeon. She’s going to star as Nancy Drew in an upcoming movie. And, at the ripe old age of 14, she’s just released her very own album. Sounds pretty fabulous, if you ask me…

Fans of Emma’s show (called Unfabulous, of course) will recognize many of the songs on Unfabulous and More—but there are plenty of new songs, too. Since I’m not exactly one for pre-teen TV, I wasn’t all that familiar with Emma’s music. But I was pleasantly surprised when I saw Jill Sobule credited with many of the songs on the album. I mentally played back a few of Sobule’s songs (like “Supermodel,” which appeared in the ‘90s movie Clueless), and it suddenly made sense. It’s easy to recognize Sobule’s fun, poppy, light-hearted influence on this album. Fortunately, not only does Emma have a good songwriter behind her, but she’s also got a pretty good voice.

The songs may be aimed toward Emma’s pre-teen girl audience (like the songs on any teen-pop album, they’re mostly about boys), but they’re fabulously catchy. I’ll freely admit that I can’t get “New Shoes” out of my head, and “94 Weeks (Metal Mouth Freak),” a song about the hideousness of braces brings me back (and makes me smile big enough to show off my metallically-straightened teeth). It’s the kind of music that I loved when I was in middle school (like Debbie Gibson and Paula Abdul), and it’s one of those things that you never really outgrow—like chick flicks and hanging out with the girls at the mall.

This isn’t an album that will appeal to the typical male (of any age), so it may drive Dad just a little bit crazy. But it’s an album that soccer moms won’t mind cranking up a little bit on the way home from soccer practice with the girls.
