This debut album by this remarkable artist is one big, flawlessly smooth, melodic and extremely danceable listen. There is a unique blend of R&B and Ska throughout. The lyrics are intelligent, gritty and thought-provoking and the vocals are absolutely delicious.

The opening track, “Locked Up,” got lots of airtime when the album was first released. It’s a great tune and very catchy, but the following track, another reflection on some of the darker days in the artist’s life, “Trouble Nobody” is pure genius with a great beat and lyrics that pack a nice hard punch. The mood turns playful with the rhythmic, upbeat “Bananza (Belly Dancer).” This is one of those, all too rare, songs that forces the listener (or at least this listener) to dance. “Gangsta” is just like it sounds; unapologetically raw with a heavy bass line and laced with plenty of gunshots. “Ghetto” is bluesy with gorgeous vocal harmonies and some distinctive reggae undertones. Akon’s interpretation of Bobby Vinton’s “Lonely,” is tender and nostalgic with chipmunk-like backups that are guaranteed to put a smile on your face. “When the Time’s Right” straddles sexy and romantic with a sweet beat and playful lyrics.

Trouble is an engaging disc packed with major talent, fine musicianship and some crazy beats that will definitely have your hips swaying and your feet tapping.
