Dear Christine,

I had the most horrifying dream last night, and I’m wondering if you can tell me what it all means. In the beginning, I’m at some sort of event. There are tons of people there, and I’m walking around, looking for a good place to stand. Eventually, after I’m standing around for a while, the crowd starts cheering and the guest of honor arrives. It’s Tom Cruise. He’s walking by and greeting the crowd, and I can’t seem to get his attention.

The next thing I know, my mom (who had, apparently, joined me for the appearance) and I are in my old neighborhood, showing Tom around. Somewhere in there, Tom and I have become quite cozy. We get to my parents’ house, and we discover that my dad hasn’t gotten home from work yet, so Tom is about to leave—to go visit our neighbor, Katie Holmes, and her family for dinner instead. But we talk him into staying, promising that Dad will be home soon. And Mom dashes off to the kitchen to quickly pull some sort of dinner out of the freezer and cook it up. But Tom and I couldn’t care less because we’re too busy hanging out in the basement, chatting, making out (ick!) and dancing to the Footloose theme song—despite the fact that I knew Tom wasn’t in Footloose (but I couldn’t seem to change the song playing in my head to the song from Risky Business, either—fortunately, though, he was fully clothed).

Please help me figure this one out. Until I know what’s going on, I’m a little afraid to go back to sleep again.

Sincerely,

Future Bride of Cruiseazy

Dear Future Bride,

I can certainly understand your apprehension.

Being in the midst of a crowd and trying to find a good place to stand may symbolize your feelings about your interactions with others in various aspects of your life and the variety of ways you adapt to different social situations. In combination with this, the cheering crowd could represent a chaotic environment. You spotting Tom Cruise and unable to get his attention indicates that you may be feeling lost in the crowd.

Before I go further, I should address your main character here. Tom Cruise is an intricate study and no doubt on some level represents fame and fortune (perhaps at a price). The question is: what does Tom Cruise mean to you?

You land in the familiar territory of your old neighborhood and your mother is with you. These are two symbols of comfort and support. Your showing Tom around says that you’re at ease in your surroundings. You and Tom are becoming quite cozy—here you may be trying to either empathize with that which you do not understand or gather intelligence. I say this because clearly, and understandably, you are unsettled by this coziness.

When you get to your parents’ house, Tom is about to leave because your father isn’t home from work yet, and you talk him into staying, telling him that your father will be home soon. This may be pointing to concerns that you have about a perception (not necessarily your perception) that you are unable to provide a certain level of companionship in one of your relationships.

Your mother preparing dinner says that she is a nurturing soul who will always be on your side. And you and Tom end up hanging out in the basement, making out and dancing to the theme from Footloose. A basement usually represents intuition and the subconscious. Dancing can mean happiness and/or a balance between the yin and the yang. If you consider that Footloose was about the prohibition (stemming from religious convictions) of music and dancing, it could well be that (among other things) you’re secretly sad that the same young and reckless Tom Cruise from Risky Business has embarked on such a conservative path. The important thing here is that you were spared the tighty-whiteys…

Thanks for sharing!

Christine
