This stellar collection of timeless classics by this seasoned rock and roll veteran is guaranteed to carry you back to the days when rock was young. You can’t go wrong with Elton John, and this is the all best of his best.

The collection opens with the sweetly melodic “Yellow Brick Road” then slides right into the rhythmic “Bennie and the Jets.” “Crocodile Rock” is a happy, rollicking number that had me dancing within seconds. The psychedelically lyrical “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” features some gorgeous flute work. “Philadelphia Freedom” is carefree, soulful, and so brilliant that I got completely lost in it and was forced to hit replay it the moment it was over. “Island Girl” is a balmy, sexy tune that conjures images of tiki torches and bonfires on the beach. Another of my favorites here is the renowned duet with Kiki Dee, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” Ah…youth. Another magnificent duet is “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me” featuring George Michael. Recorded live, this one is soulful enough to make you want to wave your lighter over your head until your fingers start to burn. Other favorites included here are “Your Song,” “Tiny Dancer,” and “Candle in the Wind.” It closes out with energetic “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting).”

The cover art is brilliant, featuring a vibrant collage of images of Elton John throughout the years. And though the play time is generous, I was left wanting more.

This is a happy, lighthearted listen, rich with flawless musicianship. It’s fine fare for any occasion, be it a road trip, a workout, or your next spring fling.
