Kaylee Cavanaugh is your average teenager, except for one major difference. She can predict when someone is about to die—and that’s when the embarrassing, crazy stuff begins. Kaylee has an overwhelming urge to scream long and loud when she encounters someone with a black shadow around him or her. And such an attack happens right when the best-looking guy in school decides to talk to her.

Nash Hudson seems to know more about what’s going on with Kaylee than anyone else, and he’s the only one who will tell her the truth that her aunt and uncle have been keeping from her. Since her father is living in Ireland, he’s not been any help, either. Once her classmates start dropping dead with no apparent cause, Kaylee needs Nash’s help more than ever—because a grim reaper is in town, and he or she is taking souls that aren’t on the list.

My Soul to Take is a light, entertaining paranormal read that’s aimed toward teen readers. However, adults will enjoy it just as much as teens because it’s a good, clean page-turner with a hint of romance—and the grim reapers give the plot just enough creepiness to scatter a few goose bumps across your skin.

With a skillful hand, Ms. Vincent creates a likable and believable teen cast set in today’s world of cell phones and computers and all the concerns that go with them (namely being grounded from them for punishment). I particularly liked how Nash supported Kaylee through her ordeal—though I suspect that not many young guys like him exist in the real world, especially not in high school.

The ending will fly at you from somewhere out of the shadows and floor you. Subconsciously, you’ll know it’s back there, but it’ll still surprise the heck out of you. Those are always my favorite endings, because they prove that the author writes with cleverness and proficiency—and Ms. Vincent does it well with her very first young adult novel.

Kaylee Cavanaugh’s story doesn’t end with My Soul to Take, so I plan on picking up the next book in the Soul Screamer series as soon as it’s available.
