Mitch Fatel is Magical is one of the latest additions to the Comedy Central DVD collection. Unlike some of the others, though, this one is definitely for adults only, since Fatel’s entire show revolves around sex.
While some of his jokes are pretty entertaining, though, there are also times when it just doesn’t click, particularly when Fatel does his goofy whispering voice during the show. Let’s face it: the whispering is a gimmick. I’ll admit that it’s funny the first couple of times he uses it, but coming back to it again and again throughout the show lessens the effect—and, eventually, the bit comes off as a punch line crutch.
Additionally, the DVD’s extras are lacking; the outtakes and the photo shoot are probably the most interesting aspects of the extras (not to mention the shortest). Watching Fatel in action without his goofy voice acting is a rare treat—not to mention that he’s actually more engaging to watch as a person who’s simply being funny in the moment instead of as a persona up on the stage.
As far as the rest of the extras are concerned, though, I found the mass of fan interviews to be obnoxious. The interviews don’t add any real content and they go on forever. How many times can someone stand there and agree that Mitch Fatel is great? It felt more like an advertising gimmick to get me to buy the DVD (Oh wait, I already have it…so why are you trying so hard to sell it to me again?). It’s just wasted space, if you ask me.
When Fatel is on, he’s dead on. But when he’s not, he just comes off as, well…creepy. While sexual humor is all well and good, 60-plus minutes of commentary about it gets old after a while. Give us something other than your sexual exploits, Fatel, or the fact that you like boobs. A lot of guys have felt that way since puberty. We get it already. Move on.
Overall, though, if you appreciate a bit of raunchy humor, Mitch Fatel is Magical is at least worth a rental to change things up on movie night.
