As winter approaches and the days get colder and cloudier, many of us in cooler climates begin to struggle with the winter blahs. But while some people reach for their expensive light boxes—or simply head south for the winter—I generally find myself hunting for warm, sunny music to lift my spirits. This year, I’ve found the perfect musical remedy—because albums just don’t get a whole lot sunnier than the self-titled EP by Danish artist Nanna Øland Fabricius—a.k.a. Oh Land.

The first time I heard Oh Land’s first single, “Sun of a Gun,” I knew I’d found just the thing to get me through another dreary winter. The track perfectly embodies the feeling you get from having drinks with your closest friends on the patio of your favorite gathering place on a summer Friday afternoon. It’s such an infectiously poppy song—the kind that you easily could (and probably will) play on repeat all day long (or perhaps all winter long).

And the rest of the four-song EP offers more of the same airy pop songs with blissfully angelic vocals that might sometimes remind you of Björk. The second track, “White Nights,” is another bright and irresistibly cheery track, complete with catchy beats, tinkly keyboards, and shimmering vocals.

For the second half of the EP, the tempos slow down, but the effect is just as beautiful. “Rainbow” is filled with gorgeous harmonies. The final track, “Wolf & I,” is darker and more melancholy—yet this haunting love song is still every bit as striking as the lighter tracks on the album.

From beginning to end, Oh Land is just what the doctor ordered for a bad case of the cloudy weather blues. It’s light and airy and refreshingly sweet. In fact, even when she’s singing about love gone wrong, Oh Land sounds so fresh and easy-going that you can’t help but smile as you listen.

At just four songs long, this EP is sure to leave you eager to hear more from this bright up-and-coming new artist. It’s the perfect appetizer for delicious things to come on her upcoming full-length debut.
