GRAND RAPIDS, MI As snow storms swept through the Grand Rapids area, a local man decided to spend his entire weekend staying warm and well-fed at the Loads O’ Food Buffet on 28th Street.

Sherman VanDyk, 32, arrived at the entrance shortly after he left work at Veenstra and Sons at precisely 5:00 on Friday afternoon. Carrying a pillow, a warm blanket, and several issues of Hot Rod magazine, he took his place at a booth near the window, where he remained until the restaurant’s close on Sunday night. “I figured it would save me a ton of money if I just never left,” stated VanDyk, who paid a mere $8.49 to eat whenever he felt the need—all weekend long.

“We weren’t sure how to handle the situation at first,” said Assistant Manager, Mike Reynolds, 19, “but Sherm’s a great guy. He even helped out during our busiest times. He took care of his own dishes, and he was always there to restock some of our more popular dishes when we ran out. He really didn’t get in the way at all.”

Throughout the weekend, VanDyk feasted on roast beef, macaroni and cheese, salad, cinnamon rolls, scrambled eggs, shepherd’s pie, and much more. He also enjoyed endless beverages and the buffet’s popular sundae bar. “They’ve got such a great selection—and they’re constantly bringing out new stuff!” VanDyk observed.

Though he works as an accountant during the week, VanDyk has been offered a job as a buffet attendant. He’s currently considering accepting the position on a part-time basis. “I mean, think of the food discounts!” he commented.
