The paranormal magazine Tripping is on the verge of folding—possibly because everyone thinks it’s a magazine about drug-induced trips instead of ghostly destinations. But then a call from Charlotte Baskerville—founder of Petey’s Closet, a clothing company for dogs—turns everything around. She believes that her beloved Petey has returned from the beyond to tell her something. But the long-dead pooch may have murder on its mind instead.
At the urging of Tripping’s co-founder, Len Pendergast, Angus MacGregor pulls together a team, which consists of a free-spirited photographer named Suki Oota and a skeptical writer and layout artist named Michael Abernathy. The unlikely crew heads to Manitou Springs, Colorado—a town that holds a kooky coffin race each year to celebrate the death of one of its citizens—to investigate the ethereal appearance of a Chihuahua.
Once they arrive, the deceased dog does indeed show up, but it’s doing more than just floating around the yard. It’s howling out orders and leaving paw print warnings in its wake. Charlotte begins to question whether the canine apparition is Petey. Angus doesn’t much care, as long as he gets a story that’ll save Tripping Magazine.
Everything about Chihuahua of the Baskervilles is delightful and interesting—from the quirky characters to the slightly spooky ghost story. Manitou Springs really does hold a coffin race each year—in honor of Emma Crawford, who died of tuberculosis in 1891—making the story’s setting an intriguing one.
Angus MacGregor is your average cantankerous fifty-something member of society who wonders how in the heck he ended up investigating the paranormal for a living. His witty sarcasm will keep you laughing as he deals with the skeptical Michael, who keeps everyone focused with his logical explanations. And Suki rounds out this hilarious group with her whacky attitude toward life.
The mystery surrounding the ghost dog will keep you engrossed as you laugh your way through each chapter. I absolutely loved Chihuahua of the Baskervilles, and I can’t wait for Angus and his crew to show up in other Tripping investigation—at least I hope that author Esri Allbritten has plans for future ghostly mysteries involving these characters. I’m already planning on standing in line for them.
