Demon-slaying Shadowhunter Clary Fray just wants her life to go back to normal—but how can it when her mother’s in a magic-induced coma, her father’s an evil Shadowhunter bent on ruling the Shadow World, and a romantic prospect turns out to be her brother?

When something starts killing downworlders and draining them of their blood, Clary gets sucked back into the shadowy world of the werewolves, vampires, and faeries. But all she wants to do is spend more time with her best friend, Simon, and stay away from her handsome and charming brother, Jace.

Then the second of the Mortal Instruments gets stolen, and the Inquisitor (who may also be skewed toward the insane side) suspects that Jace is working with his father to bring them all to a destructive end. He needs Clary’s help (and trust) to keep their father from causing catastrophe for both the mortals and the downworlders.

City of Ashes takes readers to a mysterious world that’s filled with demons and all manner of supernatural creatures for a fantastic, fast-paced thriller. Young adult drama adds that extra kick to the plot without moving into melodramatic territory.

Clary and Jace are forced into situations that even adults would have a hard time handling, but they deal with it admirably and with wisdom beyond their years. City of Ashes brings to mind teenagers who step in and do what is right, even when others back down. These characters don’t live in the “me” world that so many teenagers get caught up in, which makes it a delight to spend time with them between the pages of a book.

Page-turning excitement tempered with emotion will keep your attention firmly planted in the action. You’ll get caught up in the world of the Shadowhunters and feel as if you’re right there with Clary and Jace and their friends, hunting down demons and saving the world from a rogue gone insane.

The world of City of Ashes is one that I want to visit often, so I can’t wait to pick up the third book in the Mortal Instruments series.
