Summer is a time for celebrations. It’s a time for backyard barbeques and late-night beach parties. It’s also the perfect time for aimless road trips and hanging out by the pool. And that means that summer is the perfect time for some catchy pop tunes—like the ones you’ll find on Out of Frequency by The Asteroids Galaxy Tour.

Like the Danish pop band’s name seems to promise, the music on Out of Frequency is out-of-this-world quirky. The band has its very own style—a kind of outer space party pop with a fun-loving sense of humor. It’s playful and cheery yet strong and a little audacious, too—all neatly wrapped up in one shiny, happy package.

With its blaring horns and its psychedelic synth, The Asteroids Galaxy Tour’s music often feels like some retro-funky theme song to an old ‘70s TV show. At other times (like on “Theme from 45 Eugenia”), it’s totally tripped-out, with a groggy and distorted sound. Or it’ll slow things down a bit for something a little more laid-back and groovy (like the cool title track). Through it all, this 14-track album is filled with songs that seem to double-dog dare you to try to sit still. And no matter what the tempo of the music (or the subject matter of the song), it’s nearly impossible not to listen without a smile on your face.

On an album with such a distinctive musical style, it would be easy for the vocals to get lost in the shuffle. It wouldn’t be a big surprise if vocalist Mette Lindberg simply faded into the background, lost in a big, bold blur of funky party tunes—but she easily holds her own. There’s just something about Lindberg’s voice that breaks through the crowd of instruments to scream, “Listen to me!” Though her bright, sparkling tone brings to mind images of a pretty blonde in a bright, psychedelic shift, her sound has an edge—and a little bit of swagger—that suggests that she’s not so sweet and innocent. She’s more wily Bond girl than brainless beach blanket babe.

Out of Frequency makes a great summer soundtrack—45 minutes of playful, poppy, lighthearted fun that’s unlike anything you’ll find this side of the pond. With its catchy tunes, its sweet but self-assured vocals, and its unmistakable sense of style, it’s irresistibly exuberant. And it’s as sunny and playful as a day at the beach.
