There’s always been a whole lot of fuss about Christopher Robin’s lovable, honey-hunting bear, Winnie the Pooh. But Pooh isn’t the only lovable character in the Hundred Acre Wood—and in 2000’s The Tigger Movie, Pooh’s bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy pal, Tigger (voiced by Jim Cummings), gets his due with a story of his own.
Everyone knows that the most wonderful thing about tiggers is Tigger’s the only one—but it’s not always fun to be the only one. When Tigger tries to get his friends to bounce with him, they all turn him down. They’re all too busy preparing for winter—and, besides that, since none of them are tiggers, none of them can bounce quite like Tigger can.
With no one to bounce with him, Tigger starts to feel lonely—until little Roo (Nikita Hopkins) suggests that he search for his family. But Tigger’s quest to find his family tree—and the family members who live there—leads him to some unexpected results.
There’s definitely a reason why generations of fans have fallen in love with Winnie the Pooh and his pals. Not only are the stories sweet and heartwarming, but the characters are absolutely adorable—each with his or her own unique personality. From bumbling Pooh and timid Piglet to pompous Owl and dreary, dejected Eeyore, each one has personality traits that audiences can recognize and relate to.
Of course, in The Tigger Movie, spirited tiger Tigger takes center stage—and he definitely shines in the spotlight. He’s playful and entertaining, with infectious enthusiasm. And although he shows much more emotion than usual, his natural energy and exuberance set the tone for the movie. So while it has its share of dramatic moments, it’s still brisk and bouncy and fun. It’s also perfectly family-friendly—the kind of movie that you won’t be afraid to watch with the youngest of viewers.
Meanwhile, as is typically the case with Pooh’s adventures, the writing is deceptively clever. This may be a fluffy kids’ movie about stuffed animals that come to life in a little boy’s imagination, but it’s surprisingly smart, filled with rhymes and puns and other wordplay that will teach young viewers a little more about their language as it tells its cute, cuddly story.
With its sweet, simple story and its charming characters, The Tigger Movie is a truly delightful family film. Pick up a copy for your little ones, and you may find yourself caught up in the adventure, too.
Blu-ray Review:
Like Tigger himself, the Bounce-a-rrrific Special Edition Blu-ray release of The Tigger Movie comes with its share of fun surprises—like an activity poster and stickers. Or check out the special features menu for 10 extra Winnie the Pooh shorts. Many of them are simply scenes from the movie—so they don’t exactly offer anything new—but others come from earlier Pooh movies, too.
But you don’t have to go to the disc’s menus to find more Pooh-themed extras. Just pause the movie while you’re watching it to find puzzles and games and other fun with Pooh, Tigger, and their friends during the intermission.
This new release may not be loaded with extras, but there’s still plenty here to keep kids entertained (and even educated) before, during, and after watching the movie.
