After looking for information on a little boy who died at the Liberia Treatment and Research Camp in West Africa, Emma Johnson, a nurse who’s been sent to help Ebola patients, wakes to find herself locked in a prison cell. Doctors claim that she’s contracted Ebola, and since no more room is available at the hospital, they’re treating some patients at the prison.

Given daily doses of an experimental drug called Mutation Z, Emma thinks she’s being treated for the disease, but she experiences blackouts. During these times, she thinks she’s been let out of her cell at night during a full moon to do atrocious things to other people. Scared and uncertain of what’s going on, she knows that she needs to get out of West Africa and back to the United States.

Journalist Hunter Morgan thinks something smells suspicious when the USA signs a contract with Chen-Zamora Pharmaceuticals to distribute the experimental Ebola serum—no other company will be allowed to distribute the serum. Morgan’s hunt for the truth leads him to Texas, along the Mexican border, where mutilated bodies are turning up—some with their skulls cracked open and parts of their brains missing. He’s not sure exactly what’s going on, but he’s determined to get to the bottom of it.

Mutation Z: Closing the Borders is the second book in the Ebola zombies series (after Mutation Z: The Ebola Zombies). This time, Emma’s condition gets worse, and you’ll learn a little more about the Ebola serum and what it might be used for.

Emma seems a bit too resigned to her fate, and she doesn’t really do much to try to get out of the prison. Hunter, meanwhile, basically keeps his head in the sand, and he believes that certain politicians are idiots when they talk about something sinister going on in the government. But he, at least, gets out there and tries to uncover the truth, even if his mind is somewhat closed to bizarre possibilities.

Mutation Z: Closing the Borders is an interesting and entertaining short read with a unique premise that offers a different take on the same old zombie outbreak storyline. This installment moves the story along and leaves you interested in reading more. You’re going to want answers to the ends that are left loose, but you’ll just have to wait for the third installment.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read, and I anxiously wait for the next book in the series.
