The story begins when Allison receives an unexpected message from the past. As a child, Allison lived in an orphanage until she was taken in by Dr. Vincent Capello, a famed brain surgeon who lived in a stunning mansion on the Oregon Coast. She lived a happy life there until the night that she almost died—when she was taken away from the house forever. Now, 13 years later, Dr. Capello is dying, and her family has called her back to say her goodbyes. But her visit brings back old feelings and old memories.
The Lucky Ones is a disturbing novel on so many levels. Allison has not had an easy life—and, as an adult, she’s lived a solitary life as a wealthy man’s paid mistress. After the relationship ends, she finds herself back in the place she once called home, where she quickly begins a relationship with Roland, the man who was once her brother—and who is also now a monk. It’s all a little awkward, to say the least.
But that’s just the beginning of the troubling aspects of this story—and as Allison begins digging up more information about her past and the Capellos, the details only become more and more disturbing. She fears that the threat that caused her to be taken away from her foster family may still be there—that someone could still try to harm her—but as the memories start coming back to her, the starts to realize that the truth is even more upsetting than she feared.
This is a story that’s sure to make your skin crawl—and it will haunt you after you finish. The characters are intriguing, with layers and hidden pasts. And their story is eerie and mysterious and loaded with lies and cover-ups and twists. It’s unexpected—and its secrets and surprises are sure to keep you reading.
Of course, there’s so much about this story that’s entirely uncomfortable—not the least of which is the relationships between the siblings. But the eerie tone and the troubling story make The Lucky Ones a chilling read.
