It may seem like kids have a carefree life—but in The Magnificent Mya Tibbs: The Wall of Fame Game by author Crystal Allen, a feisty fourth-grader finds her life filled with projects and challenges as she prepares for the birth of her new baby sister.

The story finds the lovable nine-year-old cowgirl once again facing off against her fourth-grade rival, Naomi Jackson. With the arrival of her baby sister just days away, Mya is looking forward to spending extra time watching Annie Oakley movies and preparing for the annual chili cook-off with her mom. But then Naomi forces her into a bet that has her studying hard every night to answer questions in the class’s Wall of Fame Game challenge. And Mya starts to worry that she’s lost the last of her quality time with her mom—because once the baby is born, she won’t want to spend time with Mya anymore.

In her second adventure, Mya once again faces the challenges of being a nine-year-old girl: the pressures, the mean girls, and the insecurities. This time around, though, instead of facing these obstacles all alone while feeling like an outcast at school, she gets to tackle it all with the support—and sometimes even the sage advice—of her good friends. And not only do those close friendships give her more strength and confidence, but they give the book a warmer, more upbeat tone, too.

Even on her own, though, Mya is an undeniably lovable character. She’s a feisty and determined little girl who ka-clunks around in her favorite cowgirl boots and won’t back down from a challenge—whether it’s studying for the Wall of Fame Game or single-handedly taking on the annual chili cook-off. Of course, her stubbornness does sometimes get her into trouble; she goes into the Wall of Fame Game for the wrong reasons, and she ends up entering the chili cook-off without actually knowing how to make chili. But she has the kind of strength and resolve and unshakable loyalty that make her a good friend and a thoughtful sister. And as she takes on her latest fourth-grade challenges, readers will admire her spunk—and they’ll learn some valuable lessons from her, too.

Mya Tibbs is a strong-willed little girl with a whole lot of personality and some great friends who help her deal with those day to day challenges. And that makes The Wall of Fame Game a good pick for bedtime reading.
