Literary series come and go—and, admittedly, some keep going long after they should have called it quits. But author Sarah Mlynowski’s Whatever After series keeps finding more stories to tell. And in the audio edition of the 12th installment, Seeing Red, Abby and Jonah are in for some new surprises.
The story follows the lovable young siblings on another adventure in fairy tale land. When their parents leave town for a business trip, Abby and Jonah are excited to spend the weekend with Nana. But then Robin invites Abby to a sleepover with her best friends—and Nana won’t let her go. Angry and frustrated, Abby decides to try to use the magic mirror in the basement as a portal to Robin’s house—but, instead, she, Jonah, and Prince end up in the story of Little Red Riding Hood. And after Jonah knocks the huntsman unconscious, they set out to fix yet another story.
No matter how many fairy tales these adventurous kids mess up, their stories still feel fun and clever. Each one paints a popular fairy tale in a way that you probably never considered, telling the story from a completely different perspective. As is often the case with this series, Seeing Red shows that things aren’t always as they seem on the surface. And readers will be delighted by the surprises that pop up along the way.
At the same time, the twelfth book in the series is more than just a standalone story about yet another beloved fairy tale. It also continues the story of Abby and Jonah’s quest to release the fairy who’s trapped in the magic mirror in their basement—and it gives a little more background on why these kids were chosen for their fairy tale adventures.
And, of course, it’s also filled with valuable messages about things like being strong and courageous—and caring for your family. This installment doesn’t really have a strong central message, but as the kids race around this imaginative land on their quest to fix yet another beloved tale, readers are sure to take note of the lessons they learn in the process, too.
No matter how many fairy tales Abby and Jonah visit, the result is always surprising and entertaining. If you’re new to the Whatever After series, you may not understand everything that happens along the way, but even newcomers will be able to enjoy this twelfth twisted tale.
