Last year, Netflix subscribers fell in love with the uplifting teen chick flick, Dumplin’, which was based on the novel by Julie Murphy. And for those who watched the movie (or read the book) and fell in love with the characters, there’s more to the story in the audio version of the follow-up, Puddin’.

The story catches up with the girls from Murphy’s Dumplin’ not long after they took the town by storm in the Miss Teen Blue Bonnet Pageant. As the end of the school year approaches, Millie Michalchuk is determined to spend the summer at journalism camp—but even more daunting than the application process is the task of talking her mother into letting her skip fat camp. As Millie tries to find the courage to stand up for her dreams, pretty, popular Callie Reyes is forced to work at Millie’s uncle’s gym. And as the two build an unlikely friendship, they find that they have a lot to learn from each other.

With Dumplin’, readers met a band of lovable outsiders who stepped outside their comfort zone to make a powerful statement to their parents, their classmates, and society in general. They donned swimsuits and evening gowns and prepared their talents to prove that beauty isn’t about your size or your style; true beauty comes from within. And Puddin’ continues the story, following lovably enthusiastic Millie on her quest to make her dreams of becoming a journalist come true—while, at the same time, testing out the relationship waters with a cute boy from school.

Despite her unsuitably dry and breathy narration, Millie is as lovable as ever: a sweet, strong, and endlessly upbeat teenager who’s learning to be herself, even if she doesn’t exactly live up to the standards that have been set for her. And, with help from her friends, she finds the strength to go after her dreams.

Meanwhile, new friend and recovering mean girl Callie may seem like an unlikely addition to the story, but as she learns more about the nature of popularity and the meaning of true friendship, she offers another fresh perspective on the usual teen drama.

With its messages about loving yourself, fighting for your dreams, and finding real friends, Puddin’ isn’t just a story for teenagers. It’s an entertaining and uplifting story that comes with some valuable reminders for readers of all ages.
