Every day, women of all ages are terrorized and victimized, forced to endure all kinds of horrors at the hands of those who are stronger and more powerful. But in the gripping Young Adult thriller, Foul Is Fair by author Hannah Capin, one girl refuses to stay the victim, choosing vengeance instead.

The story follows a teenage girl on a deadly mission. Jade and her friends have always been the strongest, most powerful girls in their posh LA community. But then, on the night of her sixteenth birthday, they crash a party thrown by the golden boys of St. Andrew’s Prep. And when the boys target Jade as their next victim, they make a deadly mistake—one that causes her to transfer to St. Andrew’s, determined to make every one of those golden boys pay for their mistake with their lives.

From the setup, it’s pretty clear that Foul Is Fair isn’t going to be a light, entertaining read. The story begins with a carefully orchestrated act of violence toward a teenage girl, which is followed by a promise of revenge—not the kind that involves police officers and lawyers and juvenile facilities but the kind involving pain and bloodshed and death. It’s dark and twisted and entirely disturbing—yet it’s also bold and positively mesmerizing. This is the kind of story that will grab you, invade your thoughts, haunt your dreams, and refuse to let go.

The characters here aren’t the typical characters. Jade is fierce and incredibly aware of the way things work for teenagers. She arrives at St. Andrew’s understanding the dynamics of the school’s hierarchy. She knows the players, their motivations, and their weaknesses. She knows that they think they’re indestructible. And she knows exactly how to take them all down, carefully piecing together the perfect sinister plan with her friends.

The situation, too, is anything but typical. Instead of leaving everything to the authorities and their procedures—making it a case of whose big shot Hollywood lawyers are more expensive and more ruthless—Jade decides to take matters into her own hands. This makes for a story that’s dark and gruesome yet strangely ethereal, too. A story that you’ll be almost afraid to pick up but reluctant to put down.

Foul Is Fair certainly isn’t a book for the faint of heart. It’s heavy and violent and absolutely twisted. Yet it’s also keenly observant and clever—definitely a book that you won’t soon forget.
