There are some things that just don’t seem destined to work together—things like peanut butter and pickles. Or hard-hitting ice hockey and frothy beach reads. But the audio edition of author Avery Flynn’s Parental Guidance combines hockey and rom-com for an ice-melting read.

The story begins with a night of bad decisions that leads to a PR nightmare for a group of Ice Knights hockey players. In order to make up for the mess, veteran player Caleb Stuckey is forced to sign up for a dating app and allow his mom to choose his date. He’s paired with Zara Ambrose, a fiery red-head who doesn’t want to be there any more than he does. So they agree to a deal: five dates, no more. No relationship, no pressure. But they both soon realize that they might have stumbled on just what they’ve been looking for.

With its mix of hockey and romantic comedy (and it’s hockey-headline-making setup), Parental Guidance sounds like the perfect beach read for girls who love the sport. What could be better than a little on-ice action, some laughs, and a cute romance? But if you’re looking for a whole lot of hockey, you might be disappointed—because more than a hockey-driven romance, it’s a romance for girls who think hockey players are cute. The closest this story comes to the ice is in the locker room or on the team jet, where Caleb and his teammates have most of their discussions.

That’s not to say, though, that it’s not a charming romance. While the characters’ baggage isn’t fully developed—and Zara often seems far more outraged than she needs to be—the characters are likable, and their story is predictably sweet. And readers will enjoy watching these two wrestle with falling in love under their no-love arrangement.

Meanwhile, there’s definitely a reason why this book is called “A Hot Hockey Romantic Comedy.” It may be sweet and funny but it’s often very steamy. So it’s definitely not the kind of audiobook that you can play when your kids are in the car. This one definitely requires its own parental guidance.

It may not feature a whole lot of hockey, but Parental Guidance is an entertaining rom-com with a hockey theme. It’s a pulse-pounding way to pass the time while you’re waiting for your team’s next game.
