Every relationship faces its share of ups and downs, its good days and bad. Some collapse under pressure, while others thrive. And in Netflix’s The Lovebirds, one squabbling couple finds their already troubled relationship tested by a car accident, an armed man, and potential murder conviction.

The Lovebirds goes on the run with Jibran (Kumail Nanjiani) and Leilani (Issa Rae). After years together, their relationship has fallen apart. But as soon as they decide to break up, they end up hitting a cyclist with their car—and, immediately after, a man claiming to be a cop takes over their car, chases down the cyclist, and kills him. Fearing that they’re about to be arrested for murder—and with the dead man’s phone in hand—they decide that the only way to clear their name is to track down the real killer.

With its unexpected mix of wacky comedy, over-the-top action, and even a little bit of romance, The Lovebirds seems like a pretty good choice for a date night at home. After all, there’s a whole lot going on here—so even though it’s not necessarily the smartest, most well-written film, it’s got a little bit of something for everyone. On one hand, it’s a romantic comedy about a couple in need of a little help to make them realize how much they care about each other. But it’s also a mystery, following a pair of totally clueless amateur sleuths as they attempt to solve a murder. And it’s a wild action-comedy, racing through the streets of the Big Easy, trying to avoid a mustached killer and a group of people who will do just about anything to protect their secrets.

These characters definitely make an unlikely pair, but that’s part of what makes them so entertaining. She’s a social butterfly who works in advertising. She loves parties and Instagram, and she dreams of being a contestant on The Amazing Race. He’s a neurotic documentary filmmaker who says a lot of random things when he’s nervous—which is pretty much all of the time. He may be awkward and goofy—and they may bicker almost constantly—but even as the story shifts from over-the-top to just plain ridiculous, the characters are sure to keep you laughing.

So if you’re looking for some action and laughs after another long week, take a break from your heavy drama series and check out The Lovebirds. It’s definitely over-the-top, but it’s good for plenty of laughs.
