What if you showed up for work one morning, only to realize that you’ve been gone for two days, but you have no idea where you’ve been? In the audio edition of Kate White’s latest thriller, Have You Seen Me? a journalist digs for answers and comes up short.

The story struggles to recall the past with finance journalist Ally Linden. One rainy morning, Ally arrives, drenched and disheveled, at her office, only to realize that she’s lost her keycard. But when her boss arrives, he’s shocked to see her—because she hasn’t worked there in five years. Ally soon learns that she’s been missing for two days—two days that she can’t remember—and that she’s somehow been in a dissociative state. Though her therapist encourages her to rest and recover, Ally is desperate to figure out what caused the trauma—and where she spent those two days.

With the help of a private investigator, Ally starts to put the pieces together—but they still don’t make a whole lot of sense. Gradually, though, snippets of memories return, and they lead her to consider a number of different possibilities. The author layers on enough suspicions and storylines to make your head spin—but, really, that’s what makes this fast-paced thriller so entertaining. Everyone here seems just a little bit suspicious: Ally’s husband, who admits to having a fight the night before she went missing, Ally’s intern, who seems intent on undermining her, even her former boss, who seems a little too attentive. And, just to add even more mystery, the whole experience brings up memories of a traumatic incident from when Ally was a child.

Along the way, you may not feel entirely connected to Ally—because her personality is a little bit bland—but you’ll definitely be pulled into the mystery. The answers are quite unexpected—but, admittedly, they’re also not entirely satisfying. Too many of the suspicions simply go nowhere in the end. But while the conclusion falls a bit short, the story makes up for it in the sheer volume of possibilities.

Though it may sometimes feel a little overloaded with storylines and suspicions, Have You Seen Me? never slows down. So if you’re looking for an entertaining way to engage your brain, this audiobook is sure to keep you considering all of the angles.
