During the hectic holiday season, there’s just nothing like a fun-filled movie to help you escape from the pressures and demands of normal, everyday life. And thanks to the streaming release of adventures like Netflix’s Red Notice, you don’t even have to leave the house (or put on pants) to enjoy some brainless action.
Red Notice races around the globe with John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson), an FBI profiler with a special interest in art theft. When he gets a tip that art thief Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds) is about to steal one of the three golden eggs that once belonged to Cleopatra, he races to Rome to stop the crime and catch the thief. But when the egg still goes missing, he’s accused of the crime and sent to prison, where he and Booth decide to team up to bring down the world’s most notorious art thief, The Bishop (Gal Gadot).
As the profiler and the crook team up to stop The Bishop, the motives may seem a bit questionable, but the sheer entertainment value of the comic action makes up for it. They race around the globe, traveling from one striking setting to another, getting on each other’s nerves while trying to track down Cleopatra’s three legendary eggs and outsmart The Bishop once and for all.
Of course, you don’t need a whole lot of background to figure out how the characters will work together. Reynolds’s Booth is the sarcastic goofball to Johnson’s straight-faced, all-business cop. They play off each other in the most predictably amusing of ways. And, of course, Gadot’s Bishop is the femme fatale who seems to outsmart them both at every turn.
Though the story does provide a few twists along the way, there’s nothing here that’s especially ground-breaking. Instead of building on a solid story, it’s mostly built on hunches and coincidences. And its style will most likely remind you of a dozen other movies you’ve seen. But no one’s going to go into this movie expecting a brilliant plot. It’s simply an entertaining comic caper with a trio of lovable stars, plenty of action, and even more laughs.
Red Notice may not be the kind of action movie that will have you on the edge of your seat, wondering what could possibly happen next—but it is the kind that will make you laugh on a Friday night after another long week of work. It’s just a fun adventure from a trio of reliably likable stars.
