With its adorable animated characters, its inspiring story, and a soundtrack loaded with catchy pop hits, 2016’s Sing quickly won over young viewers. Now, these singing, dancing animals are back for Sing 2—and they’ve decided that they’re ready to turn make their next big dream a reality.
Sing 2 catches up with theater manager Buster Moon (voiced by Matthew McConaughey) and his lovable band of performing animals as they set out to make their dreams of theatrical stardom a reality. When a big-time scout tells Buster that they’re just not good enough, he refuses to accept her judgment. Instead, he packs up the crew, and they hop on a bus to Redshore City to get the audition that Buster believes that they deserve. Somehow, they manage to get their big chance—but the success of their show revolves around getting a reclusive rocker to join the cast.
As Buster and his team scramble to write, design, choreograph, and rehearse an over-the-top outer-space musical that’s scheduled to make its debut in just a few short weeks, they face one problem after another. The film is loaded with challenges to overcome and characters that you’ll root for—from street smart Johnny (Taron Egerton), who struggles to learn fight choreography from a renowned but demeaning coach, to shy elephant Meena (Tori Kelly), who’s dreading her romantic role. And, through it all, Buster and the rest of the team try to figure out how to convince Clay Calloway (Bono) to come out of hiding. The characters are all lovable underdogs with a lot of talent and some big dreams—and kids and adults alike will be inspired by the film’s message about dreaming big and never giving up.
Of course, it doesn’t hurt that it’s all done in the wildest, the silliest, the most musical way possible. With its Vegas-like setting, it’s bigger and flashier than the original—with extravagant stage sets, colorful costumes, and grand musical performances. But it’s also filled with moments that will make viewers of all ages laugh out loud—and the non-stop music will have them singing and dancing along in their seats, too.
If you need a break from the usual holiday season craziness, Sing 2 makes an entertaining getaway for the whole family. It’s super silly—with a whole bunch of wacky animal characters—but it’s strangely inspiring, too. In the midst of the usual heavy award season dramas that hit theaters this time of year, it’s everything that a family-friendly holiday release should be.
Sing 2 opens only in theaters on December 22, 2021.
