Sometimes, life just doesn’t go according to our plan. No matter how hard we’ve worked to make our dreams come true, things have a way of taking a sudden and unexpected turn in the wrong direction. And when life doesn’t go as planned for a determined teen in Paulie Go!, comedic chaos ensues.

Paulie Go! sets out on an unlikely adventure with an angry young genius. All that Paulie Go (Ethan Dizon) wants in life is to be the best AI scientist the world has ever seen. But when he applies to work in a world-renowned lab with a top robotics professor, his application is rejected. Convinced that there’s been a mistake, he tries to contact the reclusive professor—and, finally, out of desperation, he steals his uncle’s van and drives to Minnesota to find him, only to end up with all new problems once he gets there.

When he arrives in Northern Minnesota, this young overachiever’s plans to ambush the professor are disrupted by a run-in with the law. He may be a genius (or at least that’s what he likes to tell everyone), but he has no idea what to do next. Fortunately, the sheriff’s daughter, fishing YouTuber Avery (Madison Wolfe), offers to help.

What follows, then, is a trip through the lakes of Minnesota with two teens who are both socially awkward in their own way. Paulie is bossy and condescending—a walking contradiction of a kid who’s spent his life trying to figure out how to help robots act more like humans, despite the fact that he doesn’t have any real human relationships. Avery, on the other hand, is tough and outspoken and independent—but her only relationships are with the viewers who come to her channel to watch her catch fish in her swimsuit. Neither one really knows how to act around real people, which leads to plenty of awkwardly funny moments. But despite their quirks, you might fall in love with both of them.

Their story, meanwhile, is filled with twists and surprises. Just when you think you know where the film is heading, it heads in a very different direction. It’s definitely unexpected—and a little bit crazy—and it helps these lovably awkward characters learn about real relationships.

With its quirky young characters and its unexpected adventure through the lakes and forests of Minnesota, this charming indie does leave some questions unanswered, but it still makes some light and enjoyable viewing.

Paulie Go! is now available to rent and own on digital platforms.
