Teenagers all face the daunting challenge of finding their own way—of figuring out who they are and what matters most to them. And when a lovable teen finds herself uprooted from a place she loves and replanted in an unfamiliar new place in Disney+’s Hollywood Stargirl—the follow-up to 2020’s Stargirl—she’s surprised by what she discovers.

Hollywood Stargirl packs up and moves to Hollywood with Stargirl Caraway (America’s Got Talent winner Grace VanderWaal) after her mom, Ana (Judy Greer), gets a job designing costumes for a movie. Stargirl is tired of moving—of never being able to settle down and make real connections with other people—and she’s skeptical about her new Hollywood life. But then she meets her neighbor, Evan (Elijah Richardson), who wants her to join in the movie he’s making with his brother, Terrell (Tyrel Jackson Williams). And as her mother struggles with long hours and a demanding director, Stargirl finally finds something she’s passionate about.

Wherever she goes, this lovably upbeat character seems to find the loneliest people and brighten up their lives. Stargirl is an eccentric teen with a style all her own—who plays the ukulele and wanders around Hollywood with her pet rat on her shoulder. She always has a bright smile on her face, and her relentless optimism tends to spread like wildfire to those around her—even to cranky downstairs neighbor Mr. Mitchell (Judd Hirsch), who can’t resist the energy and sunshine that radiates out of her. Admittedly, the character can sometimes feel a little overplayed—her quirky style a little forced, her endlessly sunny optimism a little tiresome—but there’s just something about her that’s still ridiculously charming in the end. And young viewers (maybe even older ones, too) will be inspired by her confidence and her individuality.

Her story, meanwhile, is the ultimate Hollywood story of a girl who comes to town, is discovered for her unique talents, and ends up finding success and friendship and love when she least expects it. This Hollywood fairy tale is definitely a little fluffy—and sometimes a little over the top, too—but it’s also so charming and so uplifting that it’s hard not to get caught up in the persistent cheeriness of it all.

This saccharine-sweet teen rom-com isn’t for everyone, but it’s quirky and musical and generally adorable. Its lovable young characters and their inspiring story will encourage tween and teen viewers to carve their own path and be their own person.

Disney’s Hollywood Stargirl premieres on Disney+ on June 3, 2022.
